The Keeper's Testament

Book 3 of 3 - The Apocrypha Trilogy
A Mountain Prison. A Final Fragment.
A Truth They'll Stop at Nothing to Bury.
Ava Calloway has the route at last. Fragment Five opens Cairo. Cairo opens the mountain. And the mountain leads to the father who vanished before she was old enough to follow him.
He is alive. He has been alive the whole time.
But the door beneath Masada was built to defeat a single pair of hands. One instrument finds the way in. A second turns the lock. What waits behind it belongs to neither keeper alone — and what waits behind it is the account Mary Magdalene sealed herself, the one her network has spent two thousand years and seven fragments keeping out of the world's reach.
That network is dying. The men on the mountain know it, and they believe saving it gives them the right to take it.
Ava has the code her father left, the partner who has never once turned back, and one chance to reach him before the last of it goes silent.
She was warned in Alexandria what the reading would cost her. She is about to find out what that meant.
The history is real. The conspiracy is human. The price has never been hers to pay before.
For fans of Kate Mosse, Brad Meltzer, and Deborah Harkness, the final installment of The Apocrypha Trilogy delivers a heart-pounding journey of mystery, history, and suspense.

The Characters

  • Ava Calloway - She has decoded the route to her father and she is the only person alive who knows where it ends — she hasn't told anyone, not even Marcus. What she doesn't yet know is what reading the rest of it will cost her.
  • Marcus Visconti - He walked away from the institution that raised him and has never once looked back toward it. He carries half a compass against his chest, because every lock past Jerusalem was built to refuse a single pair of hands. Whatever waits at the end of this, Ava cannot open it without him.
  • James Calloway - Ava's father, who vanished the night he uncovered what lay sealed beneath Alexandria. He is alive. He has been alive the whole time, held somewhere no one would think to look, still writing a journal in a code only his daughter can read.
  • Dr. Eleanor Blackwood - The scholar with no institution and no fixed address is finished working by phone. She comes to the house on Magnolia Street in person this time, and what she has been protecting Ava from is much harder to defend at close range.
  • The Architects of Truth - Forty scholars who believe the preservation network is dying and that saving it gives them the right to take it. They are not wrong about the dying. They are wrong about what follows from it.

The Plot

  • It begins in a house on Magnolia Street, not a tunnel — three generations of keepers in one room for the first time, a route decoded down to its last turn, and a mountain in Tibet that Ava has told no one about, not even Marcus.
  • A bronze box, sealed since the night her father was taken, opens on a table in San Antonio. Two women read it at once, in two different ways: one parses the Coptic as craft, the other reads the Penitent layer the way she reads her own name. Between them, a first-century voice comes fully alive — I, Mary called Magdalene, witness.
  • Cairo answers to a vessel, not a key. The mountain answers to nothing at all but arriving. And the door beneath Masada was built to defeat a single pair of hands: one instrument finds the way in, a second turns the lock, and what waits behind it belongs to neither keeper alone.
  • Her father is alive on that mountain, high up in the Himalaya, still writing in a code only the two of them can read. Reaching him is the easy part. What she has to read afterward is the thing she was warned about in Alexandria, and it cannot be unread.

Egypt - Three Years Earlier
The discoloration was barely visible. A faint change in the limestone where the tunnel curved, the kind of mark that twenty-five years of fieldwork had trained James Calloway to see.
